Community funds a crowd-pleaser

15 Jul, 2009 10:40 AM
THE Augusta-Margaret River Shire has provided 13 local community organisations with grants in the most recent round of the Community Development Fund.

Community groups to benefit include the Cowaramup Playgroup for the purchase of climbing equipment, the Margaret River and Districts Historical Society to upgrade their cataloging software, Margaret River Coastal Residents Association for seating along the Gnarabup pathway, and the Cowaramup Art Group to buy a banner to promote exhibitions.

Augusta-based projects include the Augusta River Festival, sixth Scott River Ball, Commemoration of Centenary of the sinking of the SS Pericles off Cape Leeuwin, Community Planning Day, official opening of Augusta’s Community Radio, and a contribution towards the Karridale-Augusta RSL Widows and Wives River Cruise.

Janet Dufall from Margaret River Residents Association said they were extremely fortunate.

“We are delighted we have been able to undertake our project in conjunction with the shire,” she said.

“The association believes seating along the path will be a great community asset not only for locals to enjoy but also to the many tourists who visit our area.”

Community Development manager Paul Gravett said the shire had a role to play by building the strength, capacity and sustainability of these groups.

“Our community and not for profit groups are the lifeblood of our area and hopefully these funds will go a small way to supporting their efforts,” Mr Gravett said.

“It was a very competitive round which shows how important access to funding is for local community groups.”

The fund supports community groups and organisations through small grants of up to $1000 for events, activities and organisational development.

Funded projects relating to community services include food vouchers for the Seventh Day Adventist Church, medical resource books for the St John Ambulance Service Margaret River and support towards the provision of BESS Home and Community Care services in Margaret River.

A total of 31 applications were received seeking more than $27,735 in funding with an overall project value of almost $273,500.
