COWARAMUP sports fans are celebrating the completion of the new multi purpose netball/basketball court behind the Duggan Pavilion.
The Cowaramup Hall, Reserves and Residents Association organised, managed and funded more than half of the costs for the project with the other half being funded by the Cowtown Focus project last November (that was 2007) which was a joint fundraising exercise involving The Cowaramup Lions, The Cowaramup Retailers Association and the Cowaramup Hall, Reserves and Residents Association.
The project came in under budget, with $25,000 allocated and a final total of about $22,500.
For the construction of the court, Cowaramup Landscape Supply organised both the earth works and the hotmix, while other specialised crews came in for the goal posts and the line painting.
The Augusta-Margaret River Shire was very supportive of the project, with Services manager Brendan Mohr organising the donation of 403 tonnes of gravel for the earthworks.
“It was another very successful Shire/Cowaramup project with the community winning yet again,” project spokesperson Sue Cannon said.
“The reason for the court was inspired by the lack of sporting facilities for girls in the town, although with these types of courts naturally both girls and boys, men and women will benefit.
“And it doesn’t stop there, with next year’s Cowtown focus we will begin to raise the money needed to put a roof over the court and we will get lights up there as well.
“To the new members of the Cowaramup community, we want them to know that we work well with the shire to get things done and we don’t just wait for things to happen.”
