Film sheds light on dark side of slavery

03 Mar, 2010 03:34 PM
THE world’s 27 million dirtiest secrets will be revealed at the Baptist Church.

Call + Response is a documentary that goes undercover where slavery is thriving, from the child brothels of Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India.

The film combines blues/rock-derived contemporary music with chilling footage, which reveals that in 2007 slave traders made more money than Google, Nike and Starbucks combined.

Miriam Lochore organised the screening in order to raise awareness and will provide guests with a list of 10 simple things they can do to make a difference.

Ms Lochore said she was deeply moved by the facts in the film, which shows slavery is used in various industries from coffee, to clothing to sex work, and often involving young children.

“I would also like to work together with others who share my concern to take action against slavery,” she said.

• The screening will be held at the Baptist Church on Saturday, March 6. Doors open at 7.45pm for an 8pm start. Tickets are $10, with $5.50 going towards not-for-profit film company Fair Trade Pictures and $4.50 to World Vision Child Rescue. The film is rated M.
