THE Bushfire Recovery Working Group invites members of the community who experienced the November bushfires, as well as those who have aided with the recovery process, to a six-month commemorative gathering.
To be held from 6pm onwards on Friday at the Church Gallery in the Community Resource Centre, the gathering is an opportunity for people to share stories and a meal together.
Bushfire Recovery officer Gemma Mincherton said the event is a way of showing support to those still deep in the recovery process and thanking those who have assisted along the way.
“The six-month milestone gathering is in recognition of how far the community has come in the long and challenging recovery and rebuilding process,” she said.
“However, while life has almost returned to normal for some community members affected by the fires many more are still reeling in the aftermath.”
Working group chair and Red Cross welfare officer Karen Edmeades highlighted the importance of regular gatherings after a crisis situation.
“We need to make sure people feel continually supported as we move forward with the recovery,” she said.
“It is often recognised people require physical and financial assistance but it’s important to support residents socially as well.
“It can be reassuring to know that others are going through the same things you are.
“Just sharing your story and having a laugh can be very healing.”
The event will be relaxed and informal. A $5 hot meal and music by Qynn will be on offer.
The ABC South West Morning program will broadcast from the centre 10am-noon.
