 Margaret River’s Climate Torch Relay

Margaret River’s Climate Torch Relay

24/09/2008 9:13:00 AM
THE Margaret River GetUp Climate Torch Relay is on this Sunday, September 28.

Starting from Reuther Park, the torch will be carried down Bussell Highway at 11.30am.

The torch will pass through the hands of a number of locals, including acting Augusta-Margaret River chief executive officer Wayne Prangnell and the soup kitchen’s Dave Seegar.

When the torch returns to the Reuther Park at noon it will be presented to shire president Steve Harrison.

Climate Action Group’s Luke Petersen will then set off on the first leg of a running relay to Busselton.

The local Relay is one of a number of relays in Australia to call for a 50 per cent emission reduction by 2020.

The torch has been designed to embody four solutions to climate change.

It uses wind and solar power, a hand crank, and a battery powered by a lemon–the fruit can produce an electric charge.

The national event will culminate in Canberra on October 12 when the torch will be presented to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The local festivities, which include a children’s torch relay, kick off at Reuther Park at 10.45am.

Stall spaces for the day are still available–phone Tarna Osborne 0412 939 955.

Glad to see that Augusta Margaret River are involved: the torch commenced and returned to Reuther Park where it was presented to shire president Steve Harrison. Please keep up the good work to save the Karri trees that are now are endangered by climate change. PS my dad, George Shervington was Chairman of the Augusta Margaret River Roads (1958 - 1960).
