Movember madness

14 Oct, 2009 11:51 AM
IT will be moustache mayhem at the Margaret River Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service next month.

A dozen volunteers are preparing for the Movember fundraiser and are in need of sponsors.

Movember is an annual, month-long celebration of the moustache to raise awareness about men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression.

Volunteer Chris Hopkins saidbecause of the type of issue volunteers deal with they need to be aware of their mental state, which is the main reason why they are getting behind the Movember Foundation.

“When we go to incidents they’re pretty traumatic and we’ve got to be mindful,” he said.

Last year 125,000 Australians participated and to date $60m has been raised worldwide.

Volunteers cannot have a beard to wear breathing apparatus but a moustache is fine, and Mr Hopkins is expecting a few varieties.

“Looking forward to it, it will be good fun,” volunteer Tom Roberts, said.

The men would be grateful for any sponsors.

They can be contacted at the station on 9757 2738.
