New program to help local seniors

10 Mar, 2010 09:32 AM
A NEW program to help make the shire more age-friendly is being launched this week.

The Seniors Interest Program has been developed in response to feedback from local seniors, carers and senior service providers.

Community development officer Renae Davies said the Seniors Interest Program incorporated the Augusta-Margaret River Shire’s strategy to support and improve the lives of seniors living within the region.

“The program, currently in the initial planning stages, will be based on the findings from the 2008 Aged Friendly Report, which outlines how age-friendly the shire is in regards to outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, respect, social inclusion and social participation,” she said.

“From the report we were able to identify key areas that we will address through the Seniors Interest Program.”

Bernice Miles, a former school teacher, living at the Silver Vines Retirement Village said she enjoyed living in the area.

“There is always plenty to do,” she said.

“I use my gopher to get around.

“It is easy to go and do some shopping.

“The streets are very gopher friendly.”

In terms of challenges she said for seniors on a pension, the cost of living can be tough.

“You have got to budget,” she said.

“Margaret River has become an expensive town because it is so tourist oriented.”

Community members are invited to attend the launch of the Seniors Interest Program, which will be held at 10.30am on Friday, March 12, at Lesser Hall, Augusta Day Centre, 66 Allnutt Tce, Augusta.

The launch will include a presentation from the Shire, illustrating key findings from the report and will outline future planning and initiatives.

There will also be a showcase from local artists and performances by the Augusta Singing Group and Les Challis.

Morning tea and refreshments will be provided free of charge on the day and free transport will be available for residents in Augusta and Margaret River.

• RSVP to the event and transport bookings are essential and can be made by contacting Renae Davies on 9780 5269 by Thursday, March 11.
