Spray pink for joeys

04 Nov, 2009 10:46 AM
LOCAL animal carer Linda Moore is encouraging people to carry spraycans of pink paint in their cars, if they check kangaroo carcasses for joeys.

She is caring for three joeys who survived their mothers road deaths, and were rescued from their pouches.

The idea of spraying the carcass to show a check has been made originated in Queensland.

It aims to save other drivers checking, and protect their safety on the roads.

Ms Moore said FAWNA and local veterinarians supported the idea.

She asks people to be alert for kangaroos on roads, especially during the dawn and dusk hours.

If you find injured or seemingly abandoned wildlife, check the mother is not nearby before attempting a recsue.

If you find a dying animal that needs to be euthanased, let someone know.

Potential carers can contact local vets to register too look after native animals.

Ms Moore has been doing volunteer care in Margaret River for about 10 years, starting with a baby bird.

Now she has cared for injured and orphaned possums, ducklings, phascogales and birds.

She appreciates the support of op shop donations for bedding.
