Street trees come down for supermarket

22 Feb, 2012 12:30 PM
A TEAM of tree service contractors felled and chipped four large gums on the naturestrip outside the Woolworths construction site in a matter of hours last Thursday.

Townview Terrace in front of the construction site was closed while the trees were felled, chipped and stumps removed.

One of the tree loppers said the council had approved the removal and their root systems had been lifting the footpath and road pavement, causing a safety issue.

Cimeco’s Woolworths site supervisor Murray Morgan said no protesters and no problems were encountered removing the trees.

However, several residents contacted the Mail to complain.

One was Elwyn Franklin who said some people believed the trees were going to be retained.

“(It’s) Another example of our shire making decisions that conflict with what the people need and want … the public were not informed … just an announcement in the paper yesterday that the road was to be closed,” Elwyn said in a comment posted on the Mail’s website.
