AUGUSTA Primary School students will participate in World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine on August 17, raising funds for third-world countries.
School chaplain Sharon Doyle said it will be the first time the school has participated, following a visit from World Vision last term.
To keep it fun, students are encouraged to give up anything they like for various amounts of time. “It doesn’t have to be food,” Sharon said. “They can give up other things – electricity, iPods, media.”
Sharon’s daughter Aniela will give up talking for 40 hours.
Sharon said students who choose to give up food needed parents’ permission, and those of a particular age would only be allowed to fast for eight hours.
Students will collect from sponsors and donate the funds to World Vision. The money will help people in countries including Ethiopia, Nepal, and Kenya, to access clean water and food, and improve their skills in trading and farming. Funds also provide relief for children suffering from poverty.
Sharon said: “One dollar will provide the medicine needed to save the life of a child. “It’s not even a chocolate bar.”
The students will attempt their challenges on Friday, August 17, with the older children possibly serving a meal of rice to the younger ones at lunch time. Anyone who wants to donate can contact the school on 9758 1525.
