Support swells for 2010 surf concert

10 Feb, 2010 03:53 PM
AUGUSTA-Margaret River Shire staff have recommended the council support the proposed MASS Music Festival on March 20, subject to conditions.

The event, headlined by Perth rockers Gyroscope, would be held at Nippers Oval, Gloucester Park for up to 5000 people, to coincide with the Drug Aware Pro surf competition.

Conditions are that proponents Sunset Events liaise with key stakeholders including police, hospital and sports clubs to address patron behaviour management and community asset protection.

As well, the proponents must provide a $10,000 bond and reimburse Council for any costs to do with ground maintenance and repairs to Gloucester Park.

Staff recommended granted in-principle support to concerts in 2011 and 2012 depending on the success of the 2010 concert.

“After some consulting with local business owners there was definite support to bring back the concert,” staff wrote in their report to Council.

“Business owners indicated that their sales were nowhere near what they used to be when the concert was held previously.”

Initial concerns about a clash between the Margaret River Speedway and proposed Mass Music Festival appear to have been addressed, following last Wednesday’s shire Sports and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting.

There were concerns that holding the concert on the same night as the upcoming speedway meet – March 20 – would force the latter to be cancelled.

It was feared that emergency services and police resources would be too stretched to cover both events.

However, the committee met with four Sunset Events representatives who explained they would have eight to 10 paramedics at the concert to cover any medical issues.

Only a big emergency would require ambulance services.

Speedway representative Jock Williams said this would not pose a major problem to them.

“We were mainly worried about our resources, like the ambulance and police,” he said.

He also understood that while police would be checking on the two events they should not be unduly stretched.

The shire council will reconsider the concert proposal at tonight’s ordinary meeting.

Recent shire council concerns about the concert proposal have included the effect on Gloucester Park’s oval, rubbish in the streets after the event, and the strain on emergency services.
