Surf’s up for girls only day

05 Nov, 2008 10:10 AM
LOCAL surf schools are again hosting group surfing lessons for 18th annual Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day.

Scheduled for the 15th and 16th of November, the nationwide event focuses on fun and participation for females of all ages at more than 50 beaches around Australia.

Josh Palmateer from Josh Palmateer’s Surfing Academy in Margaret River says the Ripcurl surfing days are designed to get girls outdoors and active.

“It’s about getting them involved in a sensational sport that not just boys can do,” he said.

“Girls are great, girls are the best learners.

“They listen, taken instructions on board and are very enthusiastic.”

Ninety girls and their mums, aunties and grandmothers participated in the Girls Go Surfing event with Josh’s Surf School last year.

The youngest surfer was eight years old and the oldest in her 60s.

Margaret River Surf School’s Merome Darvill had more than 40 participants last year and encourages all females to get involved this year.

“They’ll definitely get a greater knowledge of the ocean and conditions, know what sort of waves to look for and catch,” she said.

“(They’ll also) learn paddling and a good strong technique to get to their feet.”

“It’s all about the fun.

“If they stand up then they’ll be stoked, if they don’t stand up they’ll still be stoked.”

Josh Palmateer’s Surf School lessons are at the Rivermouth from 10.30am and 1.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday and can be booked by phoning 9757 3850 or 0418 958 264.

Margaret River Surf School’s lesson will be at Redgate from 10.30am on both Saturday and Sunday and can be booked by phoning Margaret River Surf Shop on 9757 1111.

The cost to participate in the event is $40 and includes a one and half hour surfing lesson and a Rip Curl show bag.

The lesson covers surf safety, ocean awareness and basic surfing skills.

Wetsuits and surfboards are provided, participants only need to bring bathers, a towel and sunscreen.

All Ripcurl Girls Go Surfing participants have the chance to win a surfing lesson with current ASP World Surfing Champion and Rip Curl team rider Steph Gilmore.

Also up for grabs is a summer surf pack, which includes a surfboard, wetsuit and a $2000 shopping spree at a Rip Curl store.

To be in the running for these prizes all you need to do is book your place at one of the participating Surfing Australia surf schools and get on down to the beach with 6000 other girls this November.
