Fifteen-year-old Ashleigh Fischer was entertaining at her home when she noticed her friend looked unwell.

He had been drinking, but previous experience with diabetes prompted Ashleigh to ask if he also suffered from the condition.

“I had a diabetic friend when I was younger,” Ashleigh said.

“I studied diabetes and won awards for a speech I wrote.”

She first gave Shayne a spoon of sugar to elevate his blood sugar level, and he appeared to rally temporarily.

Then he quickly lost consciousness.

“He had no pulse and he had stopped breathing.”

Despite never having administered cardio pulmonary resuscitation before, Ashleigh stepped in.

“I called 000 and they told me what to do,” she said.

“Mum panicked and just went to pieces, I told her to get out of the way and took over.

“I knew the worst thing to do was stress, so I made myself calm down and just did it.

“I got him on to his back and started giving 30 pumps (heart compressions), to two breaths.”

And the gutsy teenager kept up the CPR routine for more than 15 minutes.

Ashleigh’s call to emergency services was logged at 12.21am and the ambulance arrived at 12.40am, by which time her friend was breathing again.

“I rolled him onto his side and started rubbing honey on to his gums, so it would be absorbed into his blood,” she said.

The young man was taken to Augusta Hospital and has since made a full recovery, thanks to Ashleigh.

Not surprisingly Ashleigh is planning a career in medicine.

“I will probably do aged care for six months when I finish school, and then I’m thinking of either nursing or vet nursing,” she said.
