Vandalism upsets Gnarabup residents

03 Feb, 2010 11:08 AM
BEACH pathway users were upset to discover a vandalised seat along the Gnarabup walkway on Monday, February 1.

The seat had been chopped into pieces, possibly by a chainsaw.

Two seats had been installed by the Margaret River Coastal Residents Association using $1000 from the Augusta-Margaret River Shire through the Community Facilities Program.

Association chair Genny Broadhurst said she was very disappointed on behalf of the members who had worked towards acquiring the seats, the shire workers who had obtained and installed them, and the numerous path users who have been enjoying their presence.

The seats were placed to allow walkers to sit and enjoy the views.

They especially help the elderly, including Ken Price who is in his 90s and uses the seats almost every day.

“There has been a lot of effort gone into it for the benefit for the community and someone from the community comes out and does this,” Prevelly local Smiler Gale said.

“It’s very, very disappointing to see.”

“This type of low-key infrastructure promotes a sense of ownership and respect for the natural landscape, thus we are somewhat confused about the cryptic message the vandals have left,” Ms Broadhurst said.

“We appreciate not everyone agrees with everything we do, and we would love more input, suggestions and constructive criticism.

“We cannot, however, condone vandalism as a way of expressing an opinion.

“Whoever did this obviously feels strongly and it is a shame their message will now be overshadowed by their destructive actions.

“It would be far better to verbalise their thoughts in a coherent manner and deliver these via telephone, email or letter.”

The Margaret River Coastal Residents Association can be contacted on 97571443, PO Box 433, or by viewing their website mrcra.wordpress.com/ for further contact details.

People know who did this, and for whatever stupid reason. We should name and shame this silly individual. Not teenagers, an adult.
