EVERYONE was a winner at the Margaret River Chamber of Commerce Business Awards on Friday but the evening belonged to Wine for Dudes’ John O’Connor.

While contestants and guests enjoyed the hospitality on offer at Watershed Wines, Mr O’Connor was on the golf course, fundraising for men’s health.

He and partner Michelle Yugovitch may have missed out on the canapés and fine wine, however they were on time to hear Chamber president Ray Stocker announce Wine for Dudes as Margaret River’s business of the year.

“It’s an awesome achievement and after three years of hard work I’m absolutely rapt,” Mr O’Connor said.

Wine for Dudes offers daily tours and private charters in the Margaret River region, in line with the company philosophy of presenting wine through education, to further appreciation and encourage responsible drinking.

While Mr O’Connor drives the bus, Ms Yugovitch is busy behind the scenes taking care of the marketing, administrative and fundraising arm of the business.

The couple have plans to expand the business interstate in the near future.

Mr Stocker said it was no easy task for the panel of four judges to select the winning business.

Watershed Premium Wines came in on second spot on the dais.

Managing director, Geoff Barrett opened the cellar door on the Darch Road property in 2002, and has since established a fine reputation as a venue of choice.

In third place was SportsPower Margaret River, owned by Jenny and Colin Clarke, a couple whose 1997 visit to Margaret River was so memorable they purchased a business and settled in.

The Best New Business Award went to Sarah Kissell who opened Step into Life in Margaret River this year.

Other entrants, Margaret River Designated Drivers, Mocean Health and Fitness Training and Margaret River Bride and Groom all received certificates for their efforts.

Mr Stocker said it was unfortunate the evening had failed to attract enough interest to go ahead with the proposed formal dinner, and had instead been scaled down to a cocktail party.

However that did nothing to dampen the enjoyment of those who turned out for the occasion.
