Superulers: join the masters

01 Feb, 2012 05:37 PM
THE Margaret River Masters Football Club was founded in 1989 and since then it has continued to grow.

With player numbers once again on the increase the club expects the 2012 season to be a successful one.

The club is looking for anyone who is interested in having a kick or would like to just get fit, or even be involved with umpiring or driving the bus.

To become a Superuler you must be around 35 years of age and it is expected that you play to avoid injuring yourself or any other players around you.

The club caters to all types, from those who have never played, to those who have played at a higher level, or those who had illusions of becoming an AFL player.

The majority of supers are in their 40s so the emphasis is on having fun and not on skill, however there are times that players produce some extraordinary passages of play, and they are rewarded by being sent off for a breather.

Laurie Praed, who is 65 years young, continues to defy modern science and is still a playing member who regularly turns up to play. Games are played on a fortnightly basis with the exception of school holidays and public holidays.

There are nine other teams in the South West competition and the highlights are the Perth Carnival and Busselton Carnivals, where teams converge from all over the state to play.

Training is on Friday nights from 5pm or until everyone is exhausted, and the “chicken run” training drill has stood the test of time and is still a favourite amongst the playing group.

Robbie Thompson, now in his third season as coach, has spent the off season looking at new drills and is hoping to entice some players who have considered playing, but have not yet made it to the track.

The annual Hamelin Bay Health and Fitness Camp will be on February 24– 25 and the first training run on Friday, March 2.

If you are looking to have some fun with a love of the game call Bill Speechley on 0419 042 193 for details.
