STREET Football is a concept that started out in backyards across Europe.
In recent years it has developed into a global phenomenon and will be making its local debut in the form of Margaret River Street Football League this Saturday at the Margaret River Recreation Centre.
The game is designed to be as fast and flowing as possible.
There are no sidelines or by-lines, play continues off the walls (leading to some interesting moves) and the ball never goes out of play.
Players can score from anywhere on the pitch and attempting the spectacular is both encouraged and rewarded–goals from within your own half count for double.
It’s five a side, seven to a squad and players can be interchanged as often as needed.
League organiser Simon Naylor first came up with the idea after being frustrated with the restrictive rules of Futsal (the official FIFA sanctioned version of indoor football).
“Futsal is a fun game but the strict rules meant lots of stopping and starting,” he said.
“We decided to strip out all those rules that slowed the game down, remove the sidelines by playing in a closed arena and basically turn the game into a fast paced goal-fest.”
And it seems to have worked, with last Saturday’s warm up game ending with a massive 18 goal score line.
Games will be held every Saturday at 2pm throughout summer.
The league is open to anyone and is accepting players now.
Get yourself a group of mates together and enter your own team or simply sign up as an individual and be placed in a squad.
