RANDOM peaks fanned by a gentle north easterly breeze set the scene at Southside Mainbreak for round two of the Margaret River Boardriders season.
State team commitments trimmed the junior division down to a straight out final which saw Riley Holley surf stylishly to secure his first win with a late high scoring right hander.
Tom Hewitt showed he has a bright competitive future gaining second spot, edging out Hugh Forward with Jed Mattinson ripping into fourth place and getting the points in the cadet division.
The OWLS (Older Wiser Lazier Smarter) hit the water with Terry O’Leary surfing well but just not good enough against the likes of seasoned campaigners Tony Thomas and Brad Cowan.
James Clark slept in but surfed in his pyjama shorts to get through his heat with Mick Shaw.
The final saw Cowan ripping into first place, Clark second and Thomas third, unlucky not to find a second high scoring wave to match his first, with Shaw fourth.
In the opens Matt Walter and Aaron Gaul chose a tough round to start off with, providing good competition for Dave Carr and Chad Elton.
The wind swung to the north for the second heat and Reed Leicester and Matty Baldock made light of the deteriorating conditions while brothers Nathan and Tom James squabbled over the minor placings.
Heat three saw Jarrad Davies surfing well but unable to extract any power from the tiny peaks exiting with Jerome Forest, allowing Andy Sheridan and Sam Casseldon to progress to the semis.
Blake McDonald and Jackson Chadwick tried all the moves in heat four, but Bodie Sutton won it and Jamie Lumsden gained a berth in semi two.
The northwesterly provided crumbling lefts and bowly rights for semi one and Carr shredded his way into the final, getting pushed hard all the way by a consistent Sheridan.
Semi two saw the cream rising to the top with Elton scoring nines and progressing easily with Baldock doing enough to get through in the tricky conditions.
Sensing his first finals win Elton leapt out of the blocks with vertical forehand and backhand lipbashes leaving the other competitors in his wake.
With grommet-like enthusiasm he blasted his way into first place making the rough conditions look good while disecting each wave with surgical precision.
Baldock, Carr and Andy Sherro filled out the minor placings but could only look on as Elton claimed the unanimous decision from the judges.
“ Ol Huey” was not as kind this round with the conditions, but the quality of surfing shone through.
Many thanks to Neil Mattinson for co-ordinating the judging.
The 30th Margaret River Classic video is now on the MRBC website so check it out.
Next round is on Saturday, December 12, followed by the Christmas party, at the Rivermouth at 7.30am.
