Busselton 2 v Football Margaret River 1
SUPPORTERS travelled to Busselton to watch Margaret River attempt to win its first cup since 1981.
With Busselton in second place and us third from bottom on the league ladder this was always going to be an uphill battle.
Busselton won a critical toss and played with the wind and rain the first half.
Busselton opened the scoring with an unstoppable drive from the edge of the 18 yard box along the surface, which picked up speed off the saturated surface, 0-1.
Our midfield played some great football with Johnny Richards and Simon Corke instigating most of the build up play and ball winning.
Sean Carmody played as marker on the Busselton centre forward Danny Kane, and kept him quiet all game.
Danny Kaleta started as a forward in the absence of Stuart McKay and worked well with Woody Hangartner in the forward line.
Both of these lads have played together in Margaret River from under 10s grade.
Their hard work paid off when from a corner Danny rose well to head an equalizer which their defender could not prevent crossing the line, 1-1.
Seconds before half time Ryan Fish took a shot from 20 metres out.
Goalie Mike Hibbered seemed to have it covered, but the ball skipped under his diving body to give Busselton.
Chances for both teams were few and far apart in the second half and Busselton were happy to hold on to their slender one goal advantage to lift the cup.
While we were not disgraced, I feel we did not give a proper account of ourselves in the poor weather conditions.
With this game being the last for Lee Gaynor, Sean Carmody and keeper "Geezer" we were up for this one but the game never really got going because of the conditions and we have to live with that.
I would like to thank the Irish lads Lee and Sean for staying on in town to play in the final - you guys have fitted in so well it has been my privilege to have coached you and to have got to know you; I think our paths will cross again, all the best.
