Local in State Series

03 Feb, 2010 11:56 AM
MARGARET River’s Kane Hooson partnered Busselton’s Tim Carrier to win the men’s C-grade competition in the Drug Aware Pro Busselton State Series Beach Volleyball on the weekend.

They won their four pool games on Saturday to qualify on top of their group for the finals, which were held on Sunday.

Kane’s power hitting was a feature of their pool games, while Tim’s consistent serving also won them plenty of points.

In their 7am quarter final on Sunday they played Busselton’s Jack Wolny and Rob Dickason and despite some early stutters due to the cold conditions they won comfortably 40-25.

Next up was the semi final against another Busselton team, Bradley Byrne and Josh McGann. This was a tougher encounter and the teams started out going. With the scores tied at 20-all some good spikes from Kane helped them gain the upper hand and they went on to win 32-28.

In the final they played another local team of Murray Scott (Busselton) and Rhys Thompson (Dunsborough).

The sudden emergence of a strong breeze meant that the grand final was played in tricky conditions, with many shots drifting out in the wind.

Some great volleyball was played by both sides, but it was Murray and Rhys who adapted better in the first set, winning it 17-15.

Kane and Tim adjusted in the second set and played some smart volleyball, winning points with clever cut shots and dipping serves.

They won 15-12 and were fired up for the third and decisive set.

With teams playing to 12, there was little margin for error and it was Tim and Kane that proved more consistent.

Their scrambling skills were put to the test, as Murray and Rhys produced some excellent shots, but they managed to keep getting the ball back.

They landed themselves two match points and while Murray and Rhys saved the first, on the second Tim set Kane up for a powerful spike, which landed on the line to gift them the set and the match.

In the men’s A-grade competition John Lawrie (Margaret River) and Allan Coulthard (ex-Margaret River) were undefeated in their pool matches and won their way through to the grand final.

They were up against Busselton brothers Rob and Barry Kinninmont and played some exciting volleyball, but eventually lost in two sets.
