Matthew Flinders Cup

03 Mar, 2010 02:39 PM
THE Augusta Yacht Club joined the Augusta River Festival activities on Sunday, February 28 by staging the annual Matthew Flinders Cup for monohull boats.

The race was held at the Colourpatch area near the river mouth in amongst the other water fun.

The weather was sensational, clear blue skies, warm sun and lots of action in the water, mostly from the kids.

The race consisted of two laps of a course set for the day, five boats started, Seabird, Anitra, F Troop, Big Red Dwarf and Aquataine.

The wind was constantly changing direction which caused plenty of headaches for the crews, a number of the yachts were becalmed at times but some spinnakers were seen at other times and the low water levels saw a number of the boats grounded.

Who was the skipper who jumped over to push the boat off the mud only to have it get free and take off, leaving the skipper to chase after it and clamber back on just in time to avoid a long swim?

Results

First: Seabird, Brent and Leanne Ettridge with Mark Heyink

Second: Anitra, Ray and Bev Wakelin with Peter Johnston

Third: F Troop, Peter Compton and Ray Pond

The day was a great success with good exposure to the club and yachts.

Although it is always tricky sailing in the restricted waters there is always an expectation of excitement leading up to the event.

Thanks to Mal for the support boat and Don for the finish line duties.

Next weekend, March 7th, the running of the Club Championship heat 7 will be held at the club and spectators and visitors are welcome, a BYO barbecue will be held after.
