Margaret River 2 v YOBs
MR2 hosted the previously unbeaten YOBs in Cowaramup on Saturday, and again had a windy morning to contend with, this time a chilly south easterly.
YOBs won the toss and invited MR2 to bat first.
Openers Dylan Johnson-Swainston and Will Young got the home team off to a steady start, blunting the attack and laying a good foundation for the innings.
Will was a little unlucky to pick out the fine leg fielder with a solid hook shot, and a good pair of hands saw him on his way for nine (two fours).
This brought Jack Thompson to the crease, and he and Dylan increased the scoring rate until Dylan retired on 17 with the score on 61 at the end of the 12th over.
A couple of quick wickets, and then Jack Leavesley joined Jack T – they batted together for a while until Jack T retired on 27.
Then Jack L kept things going while a series of wickets fell at the other end, and Linus Robison was forced to retire hurt on one after being struck on the elbow.
Jack retired on 26 (five fours), and with a couple of overs to go and the score on 129, Dylan went back out and after driving the first ball over the bowlers head for four.
He was clean bowled for 21 (three boundaries), trying to pull over mid wicket, going for the maximum.
Jack T was a bit more controlled, and finished with a cracking 41 not out (five fours) as MR2 reached 8/153 after their 30 overs.
Wicket takers for YOBs were Jack Greaves (2/15), Bailey Sanford (1/3), Josh Embry (1/4), Amos Chatfield (1/14) and Aiden Glover (1/16), but a big total of 51 sundries undid some of their good work.
YOBs started well despite losing one early wicket, and Bailey (12 with one four) and Josh (24 with five fours) took the visitors along to 1/59 after 11 overs, and on track to reach their target.
After 17 overs they were still on the rate at 3/87, but some tight bowling from Will (1/6 from three overs), and Carlos Mifsud (0/6 from three) slowed the scoring.
Aiden reached 11 (two fours) after being dropped twice early, and Dillon Sukroo hit out near the end to make 28 retired with three fours.
However, despite YOBs scoring more off the bat than the home team, a slightly better bowling and keeping performance by MR2 restricted them to 6/135 from their 30 overs.
Apart from Will, wicket takers for MR2 were Adrian Woodward (2/14), Jack L (1/11), and Jack Thompson, who capped off a player of the match performance with 2/13.
Hugh Hoban had the safest hands and his two catches and accurate bowling helped him to a Dome Café award, while Dylan also picked up an award for a good job opening the batting.
Well done both teams for a competitive game played in good spirit.
MR2 will keep working to improve their catching in the field, as well as reducing the amount of short pitched bowling, and trying to play the ball more along the ground, after six players were caught out in this game.
On Saturday we are again at home in Cowaramup, this time playing Dunsborough, who will be confident after a 9/157 to 8/126 home win over MR1.
In last week’s other game GMAS 7/139 outscored St Mary’s who made 9/117.
