Roll into 2010 season

24 Feb, 2010 09:47 AM
FOOTBALL Margaret River approaches the upcoming season in its 26th year of existence.

Still very young in comparison to many sports organisations the club continues to work toward its main goal of providing the facilities and expertise to offer another viable sporting option for the members’ of our ever growing community.

Founded in 1986 on the basis of a single senior men’s side the club now is now the largest in the Junior association with approximately 250 junior members from u/5s to u/17s along with two senior men’s and a women’s side all competing in local competitions.

It is yet another community success story, a credit to the town’s volunteers, parents, sponsoring businesses and our fantastic facilities.

Testimony to the effectiveness of these combined efforts is the growing list of youth players that have been selected to play for South West Phoenix in the Perth league, this offers these players a pathway to higher achievement and the club wishes them all the best in their endeavours.

In its short history the club has also won both the Senior Men’s and Women’s League and Cup competitions.

So far this year the club has completed another successful twilight summer competition, which saw the victorious Gecko Effect 6-a-side machine emerge with the trophy.

This is a largely friendly summer event run on the main oval at Gloucester Park, which requires all teams to incorporate junior and female players in their teams.

Eight teams participated in this year’s comp with Gecko Effect the eventual winners after defeating Green Reapers 5-3 in the final, which was followed by a barbecue and drinks.

The club has since taken the bus ride across to Balingup to play in a friendly tournament where our Senior Men’s side secured a 7-1 victory over the tournament hosts.

The next event on the club’s calendar is its annual pre-season Carnival now entering its 16th year.

One of the most popular Carnivals in the State FMR, will play host to 18 men’s and 10 women’s teams attending from as far afield as Perth and Albany.

To be run once again at the main oval in Gloucester Park over the weekend of the 13th and 14th of March, the Margaret River Carnival is a terrific showcase for our town, our club and the game itself.

Junior Musters will be held in the next couple of weeks so keep an eye on the local paper for dates or go tofootballmargaretriver.org for more information.

With Australia already qualifying for 2010 in South Africa we know that interest in the round ball game will be at a high, so if you would like to get involved, come along to training on Tuesday or Thursday night on the main oval 6pm or register your interest by giving Stuart McKay a ring on 9757 2864.
