Saints triumph over flat Bulls

18 Nov, 2009 09:37 AM
GAME 3 of the A grade cricket season saw Cowaramup face off against St Mary’s on a ‘greenish’ Churchill wicket.

With the game being played on a Sunday it had many players shaking their heads about the decision.

Bull’s captain “Mugga” Mullins lost the toss and was sent in to bat, which at first seemed like a blessing in disguise.

Ben Shepard (16) and Dave Johnson (60) got the Bulls off to a blistering start with again Johnson looking in superb touch.

Both batsmen looked very comfortable at the crease yet with the dismissal of Shepard on 59 it saw Travis Clydesdale (30) join Johnson in the middle.

Both batsmen looked in very good form blasting any wayward delivery to the boundary.

The Bulls were racing along and with Clydesdale smashing balls to the boundary they looked to be going well.

They reached drinks having only one wicket down for 101.

Yet things after drinks seemed to change.

Johnson was beaten, being bowled from a quicker delivery which then caused a huge batting collapse.

It saw Bramston, Clydesdale, Hibberd, Longden, and A grade debutant Murray all fall in the space of seven overs for 18 runs.

Kye Barrow and the skipper then found themselves trying to rescue the innings for the Bulls.

They put on a very important 40 runs before Barrow was questionably caught in front for LBW.

Dano Williams then jumped into action looking very confident at the crease in what was a tough situation.

He compiled 23 off nearly as many balls to steer the Bulls to the target total of 200.

Mullins too, looked very much a batsman pitching in with a solid 28 only to be very unlucky being run out on the last ball of the innings to give the Bulls a total of 196.

Cowaramup then took to the field looking sharp and eager to claim a win, but St Mary’s had other ideas.

The Bulls were unable to strike early and St Mary’s opening partnership looked very solid with the ball reaching the boundary on a number of occasions.

It took captain Mullins to finally break the partnership on 55 and with Brock Murray soon taking his first A grade wicket not long after the Bull’s were still in the game.

But St Mary’s rallied putting a partnership of 57 on, between Cummings and Hickey.

It took the wise head of Dano Williams to break the partnership catching Cummings in front for his total of 64.

Williams then turned the game on its head, again, bowling three batsmen in as many overs.

The Bulls were right back in it thanks to the brilliant bowling from Williams.

The Saints needed 36 from as many bowls, and with danger batsman Matt Hickey being dropped on several occasions it kept them well and truly in the game.

It came down to the final over where Hickey scored the winning runs and put the Bulls to sleep.

In what was again another close loss for the Bulls there were many downed egos and droopy heads.

They now have a week off to prepare for a grudge match against Margaret River in what now seems to be a must-win game.
