WELCOME to 2010 soccer fans, what a year we have ahead of us, with the Socceroos off to the World Cup in South Africa.
Australia has drawn what is arguably one of the hardest groups in the Cup with Germany ranked at 6, and Serbia at 19 and one of the strongest African teams Ghana, so the quest to the next round will not be easy.
Our friends in England have to overcome the might of Slovenia (31) and Algeria (26) – doesn’t seem fair really.
Australia play Germany first up on 13th June.
Locally the Summer six a side Comp has been a great success with players of both sexes taking part with ages ranging from 10 to the over 50s.
The team to beat at the moment is Gecko Effect who crushed the Coopers last week 7 -3.
The six a side comp will finish in mid February and then it will be straight into pre-season training as we have again entered two men’s teams and a Ladies team into the SWSA competition.
The first task to conquer in 2010 is our Pre Season Carnival on 13th and 14th of March.
There has been a huge amount of interest from teams as far as field as Albany to Perth, and new ladies team South West Phoenix Firebirds are also looking at competing as are high flying Perth team Queens Park Rangers.
On the local scene Football Federation South West (www.footballsouthwest.com.au) have instigated some new directions in coaching and have amalgamated the regional academies into a Centre for High Performance headed by new technical director Paul Wozny.
You can catch up on all the news on their website as you can on SWSA (www.southwestsoccer.com.au).
Football Margaret River will start advertising for players in the coming weeks so if you know anyone that is interested get them to read the local paper which will have contact details or visit www.footballmargaretriver.org
