Taj's Small Fries sizzle

04 Jan, 2012 10:44 AM
THE Taj’s Small Fries junior surfing surf event will run January 14-15 in Yallingup, with Taj Burrows returning to his hometown to officiate and plenty of locals competing.

WA surfers already entered include defending 16 and under champion Jack Robinson of Margaret River, Team Australia representative and defending 14 and under champion Jacob Willcox of Margaret River, Shaun Manners of Margaret River, Harry McPherson of Mandurah and Charlie Wise of Dunsborough.

After another successful year competing on the ASP World Championship Tour, Burrow finished 2011 in fourth position behind Kelly Slater (US), close friend Joel Parkinson (AUS), and Owen Wright (AUS).

He will take time out from his busy travel and training regime to host the event which caters for boys and girls aged 16 and under.

Heading into its seventh year, the Small Fries has become one of the most popular junior surfing events in Australia, attracting more than 120 contestants from as far afield as Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

Hopefuls will line-up in the 16/U Boys, 16/U Girls, 14/U Boys, 14/U Girls and 12/U Boys division.

Taj takes a hands on approach when it comes to making sure the kids are having fun.

"This is a contest, but I want the kids to have fun while they are doing it," he said. "Every year we seem to get the most perfect little waves for the groms and every year I’m blown away by how much the kids rip.

"It’s not all about going out to win the comp, every kid gets a prize and we have a few little things organised this year that the groms are going to be really excited about."

Online entries for the Taj’s Small Fries are available from www.surfingwa.com.au closing at 5pm, Wednesday, January 11, or contact Surfing WA on 9448 0004.
