Three join Jets squad

15 Feb, 2012 01:40 PM
THREE Margaret River students were successful in the Southwest Netball Association tryouts in December for the under 18s South West Jets netball team, which competes in the WA State Netball Competition.

About 30 girls from the South West were invited to compete for 12 places in the Jets 2012 squad.

Rikki Cameron, Summah Franchi and Christie Daniels of Margaret River Senior High School were selected for the Jets squad for this season.

The girls are participating in pre-season training in Bunbury and have happily accepted the travel commitments.

They will travel to Perth and Bunbury on alternating weekends with training sessions every week in Bunbury for the season.

The Jets season kicks off in Eaton on March 31. Fixtures are available from the Margaret River Netball Association, and anybody wanting to support the team is welcome to head to the games.

Local businesses have offered sponsorship to assist with playing costs. Special mention goes to Kate O’Leary, who also tried out for the squad, and to Chloe Daniels who has been talent-identified by the Jets coaching staff.

Both girls were invited to attend specialist training sessions in Bunbury.

We wish all the girls every success as they are rewarded for their excellence in netball.

Busy year ahead for netballers

NETBALL in Margaret River is on its way back to the top of the local sporting calendar in 2012. After the success of our Hawks girls in 2011 there has been a renewed interest in our local competition from players of all ages, parents and spectators alike.

This will be an exciting year for the MRNA as we enter a robust and enthusiastic rebuilding phase.

With this new outlook, we plan to re-shape the way we play our game in the Margaret River District so that it becomes more accessible for the majority of the netballing community. This year we are catering to players from year 1 all the way through to year 12 with various netballing programs and competitions.

On Saturday mornings Net-Set-Go will be available to the girls in years 1 and 2 and a new program called Subs will be on offer for the year 3 and 4 players.

This season, girls in year 5 and 6 will also play in a busy Saturday morning competition.

As for players in years 7 to 9 their competition will be held in the evening, mid-week, and for years 10 to 12, they will join in with the ladies competition also held mid- week.

Due to the expected increase in player numbers this year, we believe 2012 will be one of the healthiest, strongest and more competitive seasons we have seen for many years.

So to be a part of this exciting time for our local game, come along and register on either of the following days - Wednesday, February 22 3.30-6pm or Saturday, February 25 9-11.30am.
