Men’s Night Tennis Competition

22 Apr, 2009 09:46 AM
ANOTHER fantastic summer of Men’s Night Tennis has wrapped up for 2009. It has been a bumper year for both quality and numbers, with fearless and memorable action being served up every week to decide the eventual finalists.

In the Moss Wood Shield, which involves playing singles and doubles, the team of Wham (Julian Nichols, Andre Botha, Bernie Abbott) took down the dominant side of the year in Wang Chung (Simon Cockburn, Drew McKenzie, Aaron Paganoni).

In a titanic final, it looked as if Wang Chung had it sewn up with 2 match points up their sleeve, but Wham dug deep and hit winners at will on the pressure points, leaving the form side of the year in their wake to take the chocolates for 2009.

The Moss Wood Cup final saw the masters of doubles, Boranup (Wayne Hickey, Nev Veitch, Dave McInerney, Michael Wise) take on the young guns, Lefties (Adam Bancroft, Simon Lentjes, Terry Keys, Mark Messenger).

In what may well have been a foregone conclusion, Lefties pace and aggression proved no match for the undefeated, wily craft of Boranup.

Individual winners were Simon Cockburn (86%) in the Moss Wood Shield with daylight to the next best,Andreas Papageorge (72%). In the Moss Wood Cup, Wayne Hickey (97%) showed his class having lost 1 set all year, and not far behind was the enigmatic grace of Michael Wise (94%).

Thanks for everyone’s teamwork in making sure reserves were called if needed, and indeed, thanks to the reserves for coming down.

The Presentation Night will be held at the Gnarabar on the 2nd of May with a bus for transport from town.

It should be an epic night and would be excellent to see you all there.
