Rising tennis star calls Margs home

NEW Zealand tennis star Logan Mackenzie is calling Margaret River home while he trains for upcoming tournaments on the junior circuit.

Making the move west to be with family, 18-year-old Mackenzie is getting his career back on track after suffering a setback when diagnosed with glandular fever earlier this year.

He left for South Africa last Sunday and has plans to travel to Melbourne, Fiji, Canada and India before the year is out.

Ross Murray, former national performance coach for Scotland and former New Zealand team head coach, who moved to Margaret River just to train Mackenzie will be making the trips with him.

Coach and player have only been working together for three weeks but say everything is on track, thanks largely to the great facilities the town has to offer.

Mackenzie says having everything so close together is a bonus when he is trying to squeeze in four hours of training a day.

“The facilities are awesome, better than in some of the big cities,” Mackenzie said, whose daily regime includes two hours of tennis, one hour a day in the gym and pilates.

Mackenzie has also recruited Body Club owner/operator Ian Hedley as his strength and conditioning coach.

“Ross is obviously the tennis coach, but I’m helping him get fit and into shape,” Hedley said.

“It’s great working with elite athletes.”

They have been working on flexibility, strength and explosive power, and Hedley says he is impressed with Mackenzie’s stamina.

“The thing I’ve noticed is he has a really high threshold.

“He can work at a high intensity for a long period of time.”

Mackenzie’s goal this year is to qualify for the Commonwealth Games.

Trials are in India in October.
