Sixteen men, reportedly suburban league footballers, have been arrested in relation to an alleged pack rape on two women in Phillip Island earlier this month.
The men, aged between 17 and 20, were taken into custody after a raids on four properties in Montmorency, Bundoora and Briar Hill about 6am this morning.
The group of men are being interviewed by members of the sexual crimes squad.
The two women were allegedly sexually assaulted at Phillip Island on October 10.
Detective Inspector Glenn Davies said violence against women would not be tolerated and any such crimes thoroughly investigated.
"I encourage all women who are victims of sexual assault to report these offences to police," he said.
It has been reported by News Limited that the men were members of the Northern Football League, formerly known as the Diamond Valley Football League.
The league was unaware of the allegations when contacted by The Age.
