Disappointment at Two Oceans decision

10 Mar, 2010 10:28 AM
I AM writing to express my utter disappointment at the council’s decision to give the ‘go ahead’ to Two Oceans development.

I ask you Cr Jenny McGregor, who are you to say Augusta is dying, that this will be good for Augusta?

You don’t live in this beautiful place and Augusta is about the only place left in the Cape region that still remains a naturally wild beautiful place.

No developer will ever be able to match this by trying to create some man-made lake, to try and make Augusta the wedding capital of the South West.

One only has to take a drive to the lighthouse and waterwheel and let God’s creation do the speaking.

We have the third windiest cape in the world and this is to one advantage as it drives the masses away – they couldn’t cope when we get the southerlies blowing straight from Antarctica for sometimes weeks at a time.

Why do you think we, who live here and love the place, came here?

When one leaves buoy-heavy trafficked Margaret River and drives into Augusta and sees the magnificent coast and river, and feels the fresh ocean breeze it’s like heaven on earth.

And I want to congratulate Crs Michael Smart and Lyn Serventy – the only two councillors who have some insight into the realities of this dreadful proposal and the long-term negative impact it will have on Augusta.

The most southern part of the spectacular Leeuwin Ridge is adjoining this farmland property, where they want to place this high density, ugly development.

These developers with their dollars to waste should think before making such grandiose high-in-the-sky plans.

Augusta will always be a seasonal town and the business community have to accept this truth.

Why try and create another town centre right under our magnificent Leeuwin Ridge?

As I mentioned at the council meeting, the narrow Hillview Rd is a tourist road taking you up through the karri forest and to the top golf course and will not cope with trucks going to and fro up to service the property.

It is also a high fire risk up there and water is precious.

Not a commodity to waste by any means.

And like Michael Smart mentioned, “why take this development so far away from the town centre where the hospital is and medical centres are?”

I could go on but there would not be the room to print it all.

One thing I feel confident of is – some people from Augusta will be pleased I have tried to express the negative impact of this development and I ask all residents to take a drive out to our airport.

Get out of your car and fix your eyes up to our only hill – the Leeuwin Ridge, and see the absolute beautiful and peace and tranquillity it offers – now visualise on the slightly cleared patch below all these buildings that are proposed and you may just understand how precious this place Augusta really is.
