Green shirts and wobbly knees: the perimeter road

01 Jul, 2009 09:42 AM
THE now proposed route for the bypass road around Margaret River has caused a lot of comment and confusion.

The route has been changed so often, a bit like chooks laying in a haystack, you never know where the next nest will be.

The comment by the shire president that where the road is now going will cause irreparable damage to some landowners’ businesses is an example of very shallow thinking.

The now preferred route is adjacent to the unmade portion of Darch Road.

I have previously stated the logical bypass road is Darch Road and why now hasn’t this been chosen as the designated road?

The answer is simple, the shire councillors are afraid, afraid of the backlash from clearing the unmade portion of Darch Road.

Any decision based on fear is rarely the right decision, so find the courage to designate this road as the road for the bypass.

This is what road reserves are intended for.

Learn to wear the criticism that will follow.

The habitat of some rare cockatoo, or the habitat of former rare unseen animals and of course those rare plants.

Take a road trip to Albany and on the way all you see are trees.

On our land we have planted more trees in recent years than what are on Darch Road.

An enormous amount of trees have been planted in our shire in recent years and in comparison the trees on Darch Road are insignificant.

The Darch Road route will interfere with no landowners, it will not entail ongoing legal claims for compensation from businesses or special compensation deals for subdivisions etc.

A straight road with no complicated crossover, unlike the proposed route.

What I find absolutely strange and concerning is the amount of time and money the shire has wasted on this project already and yet it is a Main Roads project, and who will pay for it and decide the route?

I can only trust the Main Roads are not being conned into this proposed route.

I would expect their engineers will base their decision on sound sensible engineering expertise.

As it is now the route is being decided by green shirts and wobbly knees.
