Karridale proposal a "waste of land"

11 Nov, 2009 10:17 AM
RE Karridale Hamlet Strategy: having studied the proposal particularly the area between the two roads Bushby and Chapman I’m afraid I’ve come to the conclusion this is a most senseless proposal imaginable.

These proposed hamlets are small areas surrounded by large areas of pasture.

What a waste of land.

The first three nodes carry a statement “completely avoid seasonally waterlogged areas”.

Why on earth would you choose an area that is waterlogged for three to four months of a year?

Land is precious, so why take it out of production?

The strategy states the green land, which is the bulk of the proposal, could still be used for crops and certain animals.

You have a road going through the middle of it, cycleway, walk trails, crisscrossing the whole area and you say farm it.

Get real.

Talk to a real farmer and you will realise how stupid the idea is.

These large areas of public open space – are the 230 units of allowable development going to be responsible for the upkeep of this land or will it fall to the ratepayers of the shire to pick up the tab?

Have you calculated the cost of establishment of the road, cycle and walkways through the waterlogged areas?

Looking at the conditions of development I can’t see how the average income person will get into this proposal.

Would you inform us of the cost to date of this proposal?

Whilst on Council I spent a lot of time around Augusta and look upon Flinders Bay as one of my favourite spots.

Over recent months we have read of the possibility of Augusta losing some of its medical services and maybe other services.

I would say most businesses are in dire need of more patronage.

Fourteen years ago Terry Adams advanced his abalone project.

I thought this a marvellous idea.

It is still not operating.

West of the town, the Ellis development – what did this cost the family before giving up in frustration?

Augusta needs a vastly increased population to get the services it deserves and business to progress.

If you want your sons and daughters to live and work in their own area the attitude to development will have to change.

Shire councillors need to (do) the role they were elected for.

Stop being subservient to the consultants, advisors, environmentalists and the radical greens.

Remember when you protest, your house site was most likely bush at one stage.

I get sick of the old cliches, destroying the environment, what people come down here to see, ruining the habitat of some rare bird or animal.

I note the Margaret River region is being promoted as one of 12 destinations in Australia and designated as an area of national park and biodiversity significance.

Sounds good, but I guarantee if this is approved it will make it much too difficult for any development to take place.

Yes, you can take any proposed development area and list the biodiversity of that area and argue it must not be developed.

Remember you can list that same biodiversity in the rest of the 400,000 acres of bush in the shire.

Development brings a diversity of people into a district, many creative and talented people and we are all the richer for it.

With nearly a lifetime spent in this district I have seen much development and many changes.

I am not complaining.
