I WOULD like to congratulate Frances Garner for her contribution regarding the dog problem at Gnarabup/Prevelly beaches.
I and the group that swims at Georgette Beach every morning are appalled at the putrid droppings everywhere, dogs not on a leash on the pathway alongside the bay, and dogs on swimming beaches.
I addressed a letter to all shire Councillors on this matter to see if an education program could be undertaken, and received a reply from the shire assuring me they were aware of the problem.
Interestingly, this shire email stated, and I quote, that ‘I would also like to point out that North from Narda Avenue is the current dog exercise area (beach only)’.
This is confirmed by the Margaret River Map and Guide available from the Visitor’s Centre and from recollections from the long time residents of Prevelly.
It appears that as the signs advising the dog exercise beach area have disappeared over the years they have been replaced incorrectly and are now not only confusing but show the dog exercise area in the wrong location.
When accurate signs showing the dog exercise beach from Narda Avenue to Surf Point are in place, then the rangers will have a clear understanding of how to fulfill their duties in educating dog owners to care for their pets in a proper manner.
