THE Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association received a silver medal in the Visitor & Information Services category of the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Hobart on the weekend.
"It was fantastic to see the extraordinary experiences that the Western Australian tourism industry has to offer on a national level," Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said.
AMRTA chief executive officer Simon Amb rose was in Hobart to accept the award.
"Visitor servicing and providing world-class experiences is at the core of our organisation," he said.
"Margaretriver.com receives 660,000 hits per year and we collectively service more than 300,000 visitors at our three locations, in Aug usta, Margaret River and Perth's London Court."
The Margaret River region has also been chosen as a finalist to host Australia's first Social Media Tourism Symposium (SoMeT).
This is a conference for tourism professionals looking to share ideas, network and discover opportunities in social media for destination marketing.
The Margaret River region will take on six popular Australian holiday destinations including Melbourne and Cairns in a battle to host the innovative inaugural event.
Mr Ambrose said it was a sensational opportunity for the Margaret River region.
"SoMeT is the only conference of its kind anywhere in the world, and is hosted annually by various cities throughout the United States," he said.
The conference bid has been the collective effort of the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Associ ation, Geographe Bay Tourism Association, Aus tralia's South West, Abbey Beach Resort, Tourism Western Austr alia and Perth Convention Bureau.
