LOCAL grom Ella Massie made an exciting comeback from her recent injury when she took out the Margaret River Pro Grom Prix on the weekend.
Sharing her victory with winner of the Junior Boys' division, Josh Burke, 14-year-old Massie was rapt with her result.
Her mum, Corry Massie said her daughter had been feeling left behind in the surfing scene after breaking her ankle not long ago.
Sunday’s win was “a pretty big deal for her,” Corry said.
The event allowed 40 of the state’s best junior surfers to experience professional surfing, participate in coaching workshops, and meet the big-name surfers competing in the main Pro event.
Surfing Australia's national coaching director Martin Dunn said, "No other event in Australia runs something like this for the juniors, and it's great to see the kids perform so well in quite large and challenging surf."
"It's been a great weekend and I've learnt a lot of great things that I'm going to be working on improving," Massie said after defeating Yallingup’s Eliza Greene and Margaret River’s Luciana Burke and Bailee Hastie.
Burke celebrated his 17th birthday in style, winning a close final from Mandurah's Harry McPherson on the strength of a heat high 8.37 ride (from a possible 10).
"It's been a huge weekend for me, competing in the trials and now winning this is awesome," he said.
