VARIOUS local groups and individuals will gather for the National Day of Climate Action at Gnarabup Beach on Sunday.
Transition Margaret River, the Margaret River Region Environment Centre and the Margaret River Climate Change Action Group have collaborated to host the event, initiated by the Get-Up organisation. With plans to dress in red, orange or yellow, participants intend to make their message clear: they want stronger action on climate change.
Transition Margaret River's Karen Majer said the Gnarabup Beach was chosen specially for the event as it was a reminder of the threats people face with changing climate. "The beach foreshore was badly damaged during the September storms," she said.
"Climate change is predicted to increase extreme weather events including storms and storm surges.
"Our way of life, biodiversity, economy and our children's future are at stake.
"This is our opportunity to come together as a community in a spirit of hope to send out a message that we want strong action on climate change."
The event will be held 11am-noon on Sunday, everyone is welcome and encouraged to wear 'hot' colours.
There will be zinc sunscreen facepainting for children and activities for people to send messages to government politicians.
