A FOCUS on community has attracted former Mandurah sergeant Brett Cassidy to the officer-in-charge position at the Margaret River police station.
The new sergeant has been doing the rounds for nearly two weeks and although the South West had been home for the majority of his career, Sgt Cassidy said he was very happy to be here.
"I'm really looking forward to the challenge, the previous officer in charge (Sgt Paul Daly) did a fantastic job involving the community, so I'm aiming to continue that," Sgt Cassidy said.
"I'm a very keen golfer and very into my football.
"I think the best way of getting involved in the community is through local sport."
Sgt Cassidy said one of his main points of interest while working in Margaret River would be clamping down on the drug scene, which he said was a problem in many regional towns.
"The use of cannabis leads to experimentation with drugs like amphetamines; drugs in the community lead to mental health issues and that leads to antisocial behaviour within the community," Sgt Cassidy said.
He also said emergency management was something that needed focus around Margaret River, especially in regards to shark attacks and bushfires.
Originally from Gerald ton, Sgt Cassidy has moved to Margaret River with his wife.
