THE Augusta-Margaret River Shire's population would increase to 11,000 by 2025 and 15,000 by 2050 if plans in a draft blueprint for the region come to fruition.
Population growth was among visions outlined in the draft South West Reg ional Blueprint, released for public comment this week.
The document is an initiative of the South West Development Commission and Regional Development Australia, South West, highlighting opportunities for the South West to move forward as the population grew to a possible 500,000 people.
Developing a brand strategy for the Capes region recognising the value and investment in the existing Margaret River brand is also a major aspect of the plan.
Among the bolder projections were direct air routes between major South West centres and Australian capital cities and key Asian ports, a passenger train linking the region's major centres with Perth and "a port that rivals Fremantle's".
Upgrades to Bussell High way and a heavy haulage route to divert heavy traffic from Margaret River's CBD are considered necessary to boost market access for business, and trigger CBD investment which will improve the amenity of Margaret River's town centre for the benefit of tourists and residents. The Capes subregion would also require expanded tertiary and technical training facilities that can be developed at Buss elton and Margaret River campuses.
In the next three years in Margaret River, it is expected wastewater treatment would be extended, a creative business hub would be built and convention facilities will be built and incorporated into an international convention marketing strategy.
Between 2017 and 2029 it is hoped the existing septic system will be replaced by sewer systems and the Margaret River Perimeter Road will be completed.
It is expected the Busselton to Marga ret River high voltage line will be upgraded and the reconstruction of Margaret River's main street will be complete, as well as cruise ship facilities at Augusta.
