AUSTRALIAN surfer Tyler Wright has made it to the Margaret River Pro Women's Finals to revisit the same match she desperately wanted to win in last year's competition.
Last year, Wright was defeated in the final, leaving Hawaii’s Carissa Moore to take the glory. This year, the two surfers have again edged their way out of the pack to repeat their battle for the title.
Wright had an unfortunate run during last year’s finals; she had badly injured her leg on the inside reef earlier in the day, and was looking for one more wave to help her stay in the game. However, the pounding swell swept both contestants into the shore, destroying any chance she had of a late upset.
“I got absolutely smoked,” the New South Wales surfer laughed after it ended.
“The conditions were trickier than I had ever surfed [at Margaret River], the swell could not make up its mind; it was bombing out the back, then inside ones and then bombing again.”
This year the conditions at Mainbreak are looking more favourable and Wright appears on-form after beating Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons in the semifinals on Sunday morning, 13.83 points to 9.16.
Carissa Moore eliminated Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore in the semifinals round with a 15.83-point win over 12.67.
