PHOTOGRAPHER Jean-Paul Horre has been told by most of the photographers he has worked with that he needs to find a niche.
To become a successful photographer, like them, he was told he needed to find a style or subject he could make his own and shoot it exclusively.
But Horre believes true success as a photographer and as an artist lies in going the opposite direction and not categorising himself.
"As a photographer I am always having conversations about what niche I supposed to be in," he said.
"But I like challenges in my photography. I think it's important to have an idea of how to do everything."
For that reason, Horre's new exhibition, set to launch this Saturday night at the Sugar Man art space, will be called Un-Niched.
"It's about the absence of a category or a box they can put you in."
The exhibition will feature a range of Horre's landscape and abstract photographs from all across the world printed directly on to wood.
The photographs are also printed without any white ink, so where white appears in the photograph the woodgrain shows through, which provides for a unique artwork.
The exhibition will launch at 5pm on Saturday and those interested can RSVP by emailing shop@sugarmanonline.com.au.
