St Kilda defender Sam Fisher to return via VFL

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson indicated on Thurday that the 31 year-old has shrugged off a back injury that has plagued him throughout the off-season, and is set to line up for the Saints' affiliate on Saturday against North Ballarat in what will be a major step towards a first AFL game since round 10 of last year.

The Saints take on Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, and will do so without key midfielder David Armitage who remains in hospital after suffering deep gash to his leg during last Sunday's heavy loss to Adelaide.

Richardson made it clear that Armitage would be missed.

"Another player will get an opportunity with Armo out. Dave has been good for us, a combative warrior. (He) is one of our leaders and we would rather have him out there," Richardson said.

Having started the season impressively with consecutive victories over Melbourne and GWS, St Kilda has lost two games in succession. First-year coach Richardson was adamant that despite the youthful composition of his side, its performance in the 86-point loss to the Crows was unacceptable.

"Our review was a reflection of what we said publicly. We were disappointed with our effort. We were flat, maybe the guys got too content," Richardson said.

"You only have to be slightly off in this competition. They had been publicly praised but they got a real wake-up. We're not talking about winning or losing, we want to come off the ground and be pleased we have great effort."

Reigning best and fairest winner Jack Steven played his first game for the season against Adelaide following a pre-season foot fracture and Richardson told media that the dynamic onballer had not suffered any ill-effects upon his return.

"Jack Steven pulled up well. He will be better for the run and may take a little while to be at his best."

Richardson said the Bombers would provide formidable opposition.

"Essendon had some trying conditions against Freo and they are likely to bring fresh legs back in."
