PEOPLE of Margaret River can celebrate Anzac Day with a visit to see the town's new Roll of Honour.
The original artefact, crafted in 1919, went missing a few years ago. The roll displayed the names of locals enlisted in World War I. It also included munition workers.
John Alferink of the Margaret River and Districts Historical Society said the roll was moved from the old Margaret River School to the Augusta-Margaret River Road Board Hall before being stored away at the Augusta-Margaret River Shire offices. Years later, it could not be found.
"It went missing," Mr Alferink said.
Fortunately, with help from Veteran Affairs and JahRoc Galleries, a replica has been handmade and is ready for display at Margaret River's Old Settlement site.
"This is the next best thing," Mr Alferink said. "All the names are here; Higgins, Fleming, Andrews".
These soldiers were sent to fight in The Great War for Civilisation in 1914-18. "They were going to France," he said.
Stars have been placed on the roll next to the names of those who died in war.
As well as the honour roll, the Historical Society has set up an Anzac display, which will be open to the public this Friday and Saturday, 10am-2pm.
"If people are interested in the Anzac tradition, we're providing them with a bit of history on Anzacs and the local people," Mr Alferink said.
Find the display in the old school building at the Old Settlement, Bussell Hwy. There will be tea and coffee available.
