IT may have seemed an unusual choice of day and venue, but Wendy Matthews put on a great show at Swings Taphouse & Kitchen on Wednesday night.
In an intimate setting, the 100 guests enjoyed a three-course meal before turning their attention to one corner of the restaurant.
Margaret River’s Paige Trantham set the mood with folk/blues tunes before Wendy Matthews stepped on stage to showcase her clean melodies, infectious energy and simple grace.
She performed favourites including Nobody But You and The Day You Went Away.
One member of the crowd, Rita Tsang, recalled meeting Ms Matthews years ago in Sydney.
Interviewing the singing sensation as part of her job, Ms Tsang had asked Ms Matthews if she could record a short voice message to send to her partner, Harold, who was back in England. Ms Matthews was only too happy to record the message, saying hello to Harold.
“It was January, 1993,” Ms Tsang said.
“I remember really well because it was my first trip to Australia.”
When Ms Tsang saw tickets were being sold for the show in Margaret River, she jumped online to grab some for herself and Harold.
“We got the last two tickets!” she said on the night.
Wendy Matthews will also perform at Clancy’s Fish Pub in Dunsborough on Thursday, at Cardiff Hall in Collie on Friday, and at Boab Tavern in Perth on Saturday.
