AUGUSTA-Margaret River Football Club’s young Colts team came away from Kelly Park in Bunbury on Sunday with its first win for the season, against Carey Park.
The highlight of the Hawks’ games against powerful Carey Park – sitting second on the ladder in League and on top in Reserves – was Grant Garstone kicking five goals for Hawks Reserves for the second week in a row.
However, it was not enough for the Reserves to topple Carey Park who got the early jump and stayed in front all day.
The Hawks’ League team were up to the task for three quarters but let it slip in the last to register their third loss of the season.
League
Carey Park started strongly from the first bounce and Mathew Martin goaled in the first minute of play for them. From the centre bounce Josh Morgan received a good pass and goaled in reply for the Hawks.
Play became very competitive between the halfback lines and in the late part of the quarter Justin Simmonds, Johno Marsh and Nick Derickx for the Hawks kicked goals and B Jetta and M Martin goaled for Carey Park.
Very close to the siren Scott Roche received a lucky free kick and goaled for Carey Park and at the first change the Hawks led by one point, 4-3 to 4-2.
The competitive nature of the game continued in the second quarter with both teams kicking two goals and at half-time the scores were level at 6-6 each.
The game continued with strong play from both teams in the third quarter, with the Hawks kicking four goals to Carey Park’s three, and at the final change the Hawks led by five points, 10-7 to 9-8.
In the last quarter Carey Park finished very strongly kicking five goals and restricting the Hawks to a single goal to run out winners by 20 points.

Carey Park started very strongly and with eight goals to the Hawks’ two goals set up victory in the first quarter.
In the remaining three quarters Carey Park kicked seven goals to the Hawks’ six and at the final siren Carey Park were winners by 47 points.

Colts
Carey Park started strongly, kicking five goals to the Hawks’ two goals in the first half. The Hawks dominated the second half, kicking nine goals to Carey Park’s three and at the final siren they were winners by three goals.
