Margaret River 2 v Australind 3

ON a beautiful winter’s day Margaret River hosted Australind, both teams were sitting mid-table in the league and needed the three points for any chance to keep in touch with the league leaders.

With a few players missing, it was a game that put players in positions that were a bit foreign to them. The first 15 minutes of the game saw teams testing each other out but no real goal mouth action until Australind broke the deadlock when their very fast right-winger burst free and scored the opening goal. Margaret River once again found themselves chasing a game, and they missed a few chances to even the score until Declan Genge scored two goals in the space of two minutes just before half time, the second a beautiful left-foot strike from the edge of the penalty area.

The boys knew that this game was far from over and were determined not to let it slip, Australind won a corner but the goalkeeper could only parry it out to the penalty spot and the striker made no mistake.

The game then fell into a pattern of Margaret River dominating play and Australind counter-attacking with neither team really going close, until a looping header from an Australind player found its way into the corner of the net.

The Margaret River team created a few half chances but never really threatened to get the equalising goal they really deserved, and the final whistle ended a very entertaining game. Congratulations to both teams on a great game played in good spirit, a big thank you to Trevor Armener and Scott Guthrie Phelps for going in goal for the game.
