Hamelin Bay whale play

TWO humpback whales appear to have taken a short break on their annual migration north to call into Hamelin Bay for a little privacy and some courting close to the beach last week.

Joe Kennedy took these pictures from a helicopter after he and Mike Oldfield spotted them in the bay only about 100 metres offshore, a kilometre north of the boat ramp at 10.10am last Thursday.

“We had been on an aerial inspection by helicopter, of a property I have purchased near Karridale and cut across to the coast at Hamelin Bay to have a look and there they were. ,” Mr Kennedy said.

Hamelin Bay Holiday Park manager Melissa Lay said she was unaware the two whales were in the bay. “We don’t get many in the bay,” she said. “We see them going past, but further out to sea.”
