A MAN convicted of reckless driving after being clocked at 226km/h in Lakelands last month was put off the road for a year after appearing in Mandurah Magistrates Court today.
Dennis Edward Bingham pleaded guilty to the charge which related to a June 22 incident where he was caught on camera on Mandjoogoordap Road.
The 40-year-old from Dudley Park failed to appear in court yesterday but handed himself in to police this morning.
Appearing in custody Mr Bingham conceded his speed had been “completely outrageous” but he said at the time he “felt it was justifiable.”
Magistrate Vivien Edwards said it was beyond her comprehension why Mr Bingham would have driven at that speed.
“It’s not something I want to have a conversation about,” Mr Bingham said.
“I know it’s not acceptable.”
The court heard Mr Bingham had four previous demerit point suspensions but had no outstanding fines.
Also charged with breaching bail for failing to appear for his first court date, Mr Bingham told Magistrate Edwards he had been stuck in Toodyay with car problems after emailing the court yesterday saying he was “up north”.
Mr Bingham was fined $1000 for the driving offence and $100 for failing to appear.
He was also ordered to pay court costs.
