THE RAC Rescue Helicopter paid a late night visit to Carey Park on Sunday after an EPIRB locator beacon signal was detected.
The signal was received by the Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra and after the helicopter was dispatched the signal was narrowed to within 300 metres of Kelly Park.
Coaches, players and fans of the Carey Park Football Club celebrating their earlier victory were surprised to see the helicopter land on their oval.
A foot search with a handheld tracker located the EPIRB at a nearby house in the bottom of a trailer.
Police interviewed the owner of the home and are yet to comment on whether charges will be laid.
Pilot Dave Shaw said the beacon could have been dropped or bumped, causing it to be set off.
"New beacons are registered to a name and when their signal is detected the owner is called but because the signal was coming from an older model it had to be investigated," he said.
"We would like to extend our thanks to the Carey Park Football Club for their hospitality and for providing us with sandwiches and a nice hot coffee on this cold evening."
Once the beacon had been located and deactivated the helicopter took off to return to Perth – much to the excitement of onlookers.
