The RSPCA says deliberate animal bashings have more than doubled in the first half of 2014, as an arrest warrant has been issued for a Parmelia man who allegedly repeatedly soccer kicked his 18-month old Staffordshire terrier.
A Fremantle magistrate issued the arrest warrant for 25-year-old Parmelia man Te Kapua Reremoana Hemopo - also known as TK Hemopo - on Tuesday afternoon.
The RSPCA alleges that on March 3, Mr Hemopo repeatedly kicked his dog Bobbi “hard like a soccer kick”, causing blood to ooze from her face.
The RSPCA also alleges Mr Hemopo washed the blood off the face of his dog after witnesses intervened in the incident on his property but continued to kick the dog.
The dog suffered extensive fractures to the skull, jaw fractures on both sides, broken ribs that had pierced her lungs and right shoulder and leg fractures so bad that veterinarians were forced to amputate her right leg
The veterinary report on her injuries revealed extensive old multiple fractures sustained from previous beatings.
Mr Hemopo’s partner, 22-year-old Vanessa Masoomian, was convicted for failing to alleviate harm and failing to take the dog to the vet, receiving a $5000 fine and a 10-year ban from owning any animal.
RSCPA chief inspector Amanda Swift said there had been a more than 100 per cent rise in deliberate animal bashings in the first half of 2014 and described the case of Bobbi as particularly disturbing.
From November 2013 to April, the RSPCA investigated 261 reports of animal cruelty compared to 127 for the previous six months.
In the last financial year the associat/oin was involved in 22 successful prosecutions, with prosecutions usually seen as a last resort.
Ms Swift said reasons for the increase in the cruelty that inspectors were seeing appear varied and included problems around anger management, personal issues, ignorance and a lack of empathy and compassion.
“Any level of aggression towards an innocent animal is unacceptable,” she said.
"This case is particularly distressing as the injuries were so severe it resulted in the dog needing more than eight days of intensive veterinary treatment to stabilise her - and subsequently her leg required amputation as it was irreparable.
“It is quite unbelievable that the dog actually survived this horrific ordeal. Thankfully, she now has a caring and loving home.
“We have said it before and we will say it again - those in our society who commit deliberate cruelty to animals will be prosecuted and brought to justice for the pain and suffering inflicted on defenceless animals.
"We need the public to continue to report acts of cruelty to the RSPCA.”
